6 Things to Consider When Hosting an Outdoor Wedding

Outdoor weddings are beautiful. The scenery and the shining sun add to the warm vibe between the couple and amongst all the guests on such a special day. The wedding will take a lot of planning though, of course, and there’s a lot to consider to make it a success. Here are six things to consider when hosting an outdoor wedding:

1.     The shade

You and your guests need to feel comfortable, especially if you’re getting married during the hottest months of summer. You don’t want to have to worry about getting sunburned either. Look for a shaded area so that everyone can stay cool during the ceremony. An area with trees is always a good choice, providing gorgeous natural scenery and shade.

2.     Plan B

The weather is the most crucial factor when you’re hosting an outdoor wedding, so you need to have a plan B if it’s not on your side. Rain or snow can really ruin a wedding. Holding the wedding in a tent or a marquee is one option. Another would be to hold your wedding in an indoor/outdoor venue. Often these venues can accommodate changes to plan quickly when the weather decides not to cooperate.

3.     Extra costs

A wedding venue such as a beach or a public garden may be open to all, but it doesn’t automatically mean that you can hold a wedding there for free. Check if there’s a fee to pay or if you should donate a suggested amount. Think about your location, too, and whether suppliers can reach it easily. They may charge you more if the venue is too far out of their way. Considering extra costs will help you to keep within your budget.

4.     Power supply

There’s only so much the scenery can provide. The sound, lighting and music is all up to you, so you should make sure you have a decent power supply. If the site has no electricity, you’ll need generators for the kitchen and for all the band’s or DJ’s equipment, such as amps or speakers. You don’t want a lack of power to let you down, so the best thing to do would be to have an electricity surveyor visit your chosen venue beforehand to decide how much power you’ll require.

5.     Bugs and wind

If you’re decorating tables with flowers, note that dahlias and roses will withstand gusts of wind or rain better than delicate blossoms. On hot days, you’ll want to keep away unwanted guests in the form of bugs, so incorporate natural pesticides such as thyme, rosemary, lavender and mint into the table decorations.

6.     The seasonality of the menu

When the sun is shining, you want to steer clear of heavy, rich foods, which means not serving risottos, gratin and other such dishes. Make the most of tomatoes, watermelon and other refreshing foods where possible. Cheese is a nice summer food, but you should serve it in the evenings after the sun has gone down.

There’s nothing quite like an outdoor wedding. Make special preparations for the weather, provide a suitable menu and power supply, and watch out for extra costs. Considering all these things will make the day much more enjoyable for you and your guests.
