Come over to the dark side
IF you want to be bang on trend with your bridesmaids this year then your dresses need to be a little darker than you might expect – believe it or not the top colour trends this year include navy and black!
With many brides still looking towards Pippa Middleton’s fabulous bridemaid’s gown for inspiration, gowns this year are all about simple yet stunning lines, a style which is perfect for strong colours such as black or navy.
Don’t be put off choosing a dark bridesmaids dress, done correctly it can create a stunning and elegant contrast with the bride’s dress, and there are few dresses which look more striking than a dark full length dress.
However if black or navy seem a little too morbid for your big day, then consider royal blue or charcoal as an alternative. If you do choose to go with a dark colour, make sure and use your flowers to add a tasteful dash of colour to the wedding party.
And if you really can’t imagine your bridesmaids dresses being anything but colourful then the colour of choice for a 2012 wedding has to be orange.
It is everywhere on the catwalks this season and will add a blast of colour to your wedding party – remember though with such a strong colour of dress you will need to keep your flowers, shoes, accessories etc really simple.
Now that you’ve decided on what colour of gown you’d love, it’s time to consider what style to choose. In 2012 the bateau neck is one of the most popular styles. Running straight across the collarbone, from shoulder to shoulder the bateau style is a classic.
If it’s too simple for your tastes then the back of the bateau style is perfect for some added detail to make your gowns truly special. A deep v or a cowl back are popular and flattering.
If you have a large number of bridesmaids or all the girls are different shapes then be careful with choosing a bateau neckline. While it is great on thin, straight figures it is not the most flattering style for those with a big bust.
And for fuller figured bridesmaids it will generally widen the frame. Dresses with a one shoulder neckline are also still very much in demand this year, it is both a pretty and a practical style as it provides the added support of a strap.
This year a lot of brides are also choosing dresses which are knee-length and have a natural waistline these are regarded as an easy to wear shape, are very flattering to bridesmaids with any body type.
Whatever you choose just make sure the colour and style suits your bridesmaids and most importantly, that they complement your dress!
