Wedding Vows – Can We Take Inspiration From Movies and TV Shows?

By  |

Even for the most seasoned of writers, writing wedding vows can be a tricky business. Just how do you articulate the love you have for your partner in a few short and simple, yet elegant and heart-felt lines? If you opt for traditional vows, you may want to make them more personal by adding a line or two. Incorporating a favourite romantic quote from a movie or TV show is one way, or you could use famous vows to inspire you when writing your own.

Here are eight of our favourites to help get you started:

1. The one when Monica and Chandler tied the knot (Friends):

“For so long I wondered if I would ever find my prince, my soul mate. Then three years ago at another wedding, I turned to a friend for comfort. And instead, I found everything that I’d ever been looking for my whole life. And now here we are, with our future before us, and I only want to spend it with you, my prince, my soul mate, my friend.”

2. Grown-up love from childhood sweethearts Corey and Topanga (Boy Meets World):

“I wasn’t sure this day would ever come, but you were. I wasn’t sure love could survive everything we put it through, but you were. You were always strong and always sure. And now I know I want you to stand beside me for the rest of my life. That’s what I’m sure of.”

3. When your love is out of this world like Leonard and Penny’s (Big Bang Theory):

“Penny, we are made of particles that have existed since the moment the universe began. I like to think those atoms travelled 14 billion years through time and space to create us so that we could be together and make each other whole.”

4. Frenemies who fall head over heels like Anthony and Stanford (Sex and the City 2):

“It was not exactly love at first sight. But it turns out, it was love. You are the first man to accept me for the man that I actually am.”

5. For love that survives and endures like Paige and Leo (The Vow):

“I vow to help you love life, to always hold you with tenderness and to have the patience that love demands. To speak when words are needed and to share the silence when they are not. To agree to disagree on red velvet cake, and to live within the warmth of your heart and always call it home.”

6. If your love stands the test of time like Allie and Noah’s (The Notebook):

“So, it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be really hard. And we are going to have to work at this every day. But I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, every day.”

7. When your love is a slow burn like Harry and Sally’s (When Harry Met Sally):

“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

8. For when you finally meet the person who makes you want to walk down the aisle like Maggie when she met Ike (Runaway Bride):

I guarantee there’ll be tough times. I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us is gonna wanna get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you’re the only one for me.
